New venue, new website and new categories for the most open Web Awards in Ireland
With Awards season in full effect, the 2010 Web Awards have been launched with Realex Payments once again the headline sponsor. This is the third year of these awards that base their categories on what the Web community in Ireland wants. The Awards try to be as democratic as possible with no nomination fees and low ticket prices for the ceremony in order to facilitate the broadest mix of website owners.
Damien Mulley, organiser of the Web Awards: "We created the Web Awards to allow anyone with any budget or no budget at all to submit their website to compete fairly with others. All of the websites submitted get judged, with those shortlisted going through two judging processes to decide the winners.
It's the web community in Ireland, both creators and viewers that judge these sites. Last year we had a panel of 100 judges to go through the 100s of websites submitted."
Colm Lyon, managing director of Realex Payments, headline sponsor said: "This is our second year supporting the Irish Web Awards, we thoroughly enjoyed the awards last year so we didn't hesitate in getting involved again. The Irish web community is truly innovative and inspiring, for us to be part of this event which celebrates the achievements of the Irish web community in such a positive way, is an honour for Realex Payments."
The Web Awards take place on October 16th in the Mansion House in Dublin. The website to submit nominations is www.Webawards.ie Nominations are open until Thursday September 2nd. Finalists will be announced on October 1st with the Awards ceremony on October 16th. MC for the evening is 2Fm's Rick O'Shea.
New categories:
"Demand from last year has us creating new categories for Small businesses, Web Only publications and we have categories catering for Facebook and social media campaigns. Mobile app creation has been huge in Ireland in the past 12 months so we created a category after it was suggested by developers" added Damien Mulley

David Rook, Security Analyst of Realex Payments and blogger on security site Security Ninja (http://www.securityninja.co.uk) is presenting at BSides, Las Vegas on July 28th. The presentation will be based on the Principles of Secure Development approach to secure development. The principles were produced after David analysed the root cause of common web application vulnerabilities. The talk will discuss how David feels the information security community should look to apply practices such as Failure or Systems Based Root Cause Analysis used in engineering to information security vulnerability research and subsequently developer education. The general principles and approach to documenting corrective actions in root cause analysis should be applied to information security vulnerabilities, allowing to identify the root cause of vulnerabilities which should prevent the vulnerability occurring/re-occurring in future. The talk will include demonstrations of how hackers exploit vulnerabilities in insecure applications as well showing how you can prevent them in your own code by demonstrating how David has fixed the vulnerabilities in the insecure applications. David Rook is a contributor to several OWASP projects including the code review guide and regularly presents at IT security conferences on the topic of secure application development. |
For further information, please see the Security Ninja blog: http://www.securityninja.co.uk/blog and Twitter http://twitter.com/securityninja. The presentation will be available to view on the Security Ninja blog after the event.
