E-commerce and e-payment in Germany is experiencing a boom like never before. Online stores can look forward to a real onslaught in the run-up to Christmas. According to Bitkom, the inter-trade organisation, 20 percent of the German population order their gifts online. As a market leader in e-payment, ClickandBuy is expecting new sales records from online Christmas shopping. ClickandBuy CMO Michael Grodd states: "It's incredible how the Christmas shopping season has started. This pre-Christmas period will see online sales surpassing the excellent results obtained last year by far!" Purchasing gifts on the Internet is becoming increasingly popular: One in every five German aged 14 and over intends to order their Christmas presents online this year. This is the result of a survey conducted by the Federal Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media (Bitkom) and the Forsa polling institute. That is an increase of a third in comparison to last year. A study carried out by the E-Commerce-Center Handel at the University of Cologne (ECC) revealed that online stores are able to benefit significantly and boost their sales by up to 150 percent by using the ClickandBuy payment system. According to the Bitkom study the web is the ideal shopping destination for purchasing Christmas gifts during the Advent period for up to 23 million Germans. The latest study conducted by the Federal Association of German Mail Order Traders (bdv) reveals that more than 32 million people in Germany regularly shop on the Internet over the course of the year. The "Webshopping 2009" trend study identified that people 'who made at least one online purchase in the last twelve months' accounted for well in excess of 90 percent of all German Internet users. This remarkable result of 97.4 percent, when compared to the findings of the "Home Shopping Study" from 2007, represents an increase of 28.1 percent. E-commerce in Germany is booming: According to preliminary estimates by the Association of Mail Order Traders, online retailers will record sales of 21.8 billion Euro this year - more than ever before. Computer games, mobile phones, PCs, flat screen TVs and digital cameras are some of the items most frequently purchased online. According to the survey by the bdv the German population will spend more money this year on their online purchases than ever before. The value of goods ordered via the Internet has accounted for more than half of the mail-order sales for the very first time. Preliminary estimates put the sales generated by online retailers at 21.8 billion Euro in 2009. Of this, around 15.4 billion is accounted for by goods and 6.4 billion is accounted for by digital services such as music files, online tickets and accommodation bookings. The increase in turnover corresponds to an improvement of around 13 percent in comparison to the previous year. According to the bdv retailers generated sales of 19.3 billion in 2008. Bitkom states that 1.4 million online shoppers had already bought their Christmas gifts online by the beginning of November, thereby deciding to avoid the stress of the holidays at an early stage. Ordering via the Internet can take the hassle out of laborious shopping sprees. Bitkom ascertained that young adults in particular do their shopping online: One person in every three uses this option in the 18 - 44 age category. In contrast, only three percent of those aged 60 and above shop via the Internet. There are likewise differences between the sexes: While 23 percent of men order gifts online, this figure is only 18 percent for women. A comparison of occupational groups indicates a clear emergence of civil servants. 41 percent of civil servants purchase their Christmas gifts online - compared to 32 percent of students and only 14 percent of blue-collar workers.
